Monash University researchers Dr Mengting Zhao and James Blyth created an ultrathin, 3-nanometre kagome metal film Mn3Sn hosting a tunable 3D flat electronic band. Combining thin-film growth with intrinsic magnetic properties, this breakthrough locks electrons in all three dimensions, providing a scalable platform to explore exotic quantum phases and future low-energy electronics.

Dr Mengting Zhao and AINSE PGRA recipient Sadhana Sridhar fabricate ultra-thin kagome metal films of Tbmn6Sn6 using Molecular Beam Epitaxy. Characterised via Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy, this research explores unique quantum states enabling low-energy electron transport, paving the way for faster, highly energy-sustainable computing beyond silicon technology.
